Bei den Druckern der HL-S-Serie handelt es sich um Geräte für Firmen und Büros mit einem hohen Druckaufkommen pro Tag. Diese Druckerfamilie besteht aus reinen schwarzweiß Druckern, ist dafür auf diesem Gebiet sehr zuverlässig und professionell mit einem Maximalanspruch auf Qualität. Für eine perfekte Integration in das Büronetzwerk sind die Geräte neben USB-Anschlüssen auch mit LAN und WLAN ausgestattet, weshalb sie von jedem Arbeitsplatz im entsprechenden Netzwerk genutzt werden können. Bedruckt werden können dabei Formate bis zu DIN A4.

In Punkto Geschwindigkeit läuft die HL-S-Serie vielen anderen vergleichbaren Geräten den Rang ab. Da Brother hierbei auf einen fest installierten und unbeweglichen Keramikdruckkopf setzt, der ganze Seiten auf einmal bedruckt, wird eine Druckschnelligkeit von bis zu 100 Seiten pro Minute möglich, das Endprodukt steht dabei in Sachen Qualität der von Laserstrahldruckern in nichts nach und ist auch noch kostengünstiger. Nachteil aber auch Vorteil zugleich ist, dass diese Art des Druckens nur in schwarzweiß stattfindet, gleichzeitig muss dadurch jedoch nur eine Patrone etwa aller 30.000 Seiten ausgetauscht werden, der Druckkopf besitzt je nach Modell und Auslastung sogar eine Lebensdauer von bis zu 1.000.000 Seiten.
